ULCH30030 Advanced Mandarin Chinese (HSK 6)

  • Pre-requisite: Good level of spoken and written Chinese (CEF B2+/C1; A-level + 1 year).
  • Co-requisite: Open to students not following Honours courses in Chinese.  This course is not open to native or near native Mandarin speakers. Cantonese speakers may be considered suitable for this module, depending on circumstances.

Description

This course is aimed at advanced learners who wish to further develop the four language skills in Mandarin Chinese (reading, writing, listening and speaking) for professional and recreational purposes. The course covers: the study and use of contemporary vocabulary, advanced grammar and styles as related to genres and registers encountered in current affair medias, modern literature, films, songs, and academic production; weekly practice of listening skills through comprehension exercises based on advanced level podcasts, broadcasts, or films; the exploration and guided discussion in small groups of social, political and cultural issues related to the Chinese-speaking world; the regular production of small translation passages and of writing tasks (letter, narrative, argumentative essay, etc.) for individual feedback; preparation for the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) level 6 examination in Chinese language proficiency. Students are expected to practise all skills outside the classroom, using the resources of the Language Centre and, where possible, the Face to Face scheme (enquire at the Language Centre library reception).

Teaching and learning methods

One three-hour seminar per week. Students will actively practice new language (words, phrases and grammar) in pairs and groups in class, as well as through written exercises at home. Activities will aim to develop fluency and skills along with linguistic sophistication and accuracy.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will:

  1. Have an advanced understanding of Chinese grammar and usage
  2. Have an enhanced knowledge of topic-specific vocabulary
  3. Be able to distinguish and select different spoken and written registers and styles appropriately
  4. Be able to apply different translation and writing techniques, including summaries and argumentative writing
  5. Be able to produce grammatically correct Chinese in a variety of controlled/guided as well as creative contexts, both spoken and written
  6. Be competent to understand spoken and written Chinese of an increasingly complex nature with greater confidence and ease
  7. Be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously in a variety of social contexts and on a broad number of different topics
  8. Be able to formulate views and opinions with precision and relate them to those of others
  9. Be able to use persuasive techniques.

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level C1/C2 of the Common European Framework; HSK level 6.

Assessment

  • Semester 1: Coursework (10%) submitted in Week 12; written examination (20%) in Week 12; oral assessment: one-to-one presentation (10%) in week 11.
  • Semester 2:  Coursework (10%); submitted in Week 8; HSK 6 examination in Reading, Listening and Writing (30%); in Week 11 (Sunday); oral assessment (20%) in Weeks 11 or 12.

Nature and timing of feedback

Feedback will include a combination of: informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from homework and class based learning activities; formal written feedback will be given following every assessment.
