ULCH20110 - Pre-intermediate Mandarin Chinese

  • Pre-requisite: GCSE grade C or lower, or  taken over 5 years ago if grade A or B, or equivalent. Successful completion of ULCH10200 - Beginners' Mandarin Chinese. Not open to Mandarin or Cantonese speakers.  
  • Co-requisite: Open to students not following Honours courses in Chinese

Description

This course is designed for students who already have some knowledge of the Chinese language, but who lack a basic understanding of the grammar system. It is also designed to meet the need of students who have completed a Beginners' course in Chinese but who do not feel confident enough about their communicative skills to proceed directly to Intermediate Level.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have acquired the ability to: 

  1. Read Chinese texts containing high frequency lexis and basic structures;
  2. Understand basic conversations or understand the gist of more complex conversations dealing with familiar topics;
  3. Talk on familiar and simple topics with reasonable fluency;
  4. Communicate in routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters; and
  5. Write a short text or letter about familiar subjects.

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level A2 of the Common European Framework.

Transferable skills

At the end of the course students will have developed their: active listening skills; skimming and scanning skills; presentation skills; ability to extract and process information textual information; intercultural competence.

Teaching and learning methods

One three-hour class per week. In order to develop their communicative skills, students will engage in pair work and group work activities, and will have the opportunity to listen to and read a range of adapted semi-authentic texts. Traditional exercises and written work will be used for grammar practice and consolidation.

Assessment

Four pieces of assessed work as follows:

  • Semester one: Written (Reading, Grammar, Writing) 30%. Assessment will normally take place during week 12.
  • Semester two: Oral 20%; Listening 20%; Written (Reading, Grammar, Writing) 30%. . Listening assessment will take place in the week before the Easter break (normally week 7 or 8); oral and written assessments will normally be scheduled during weeks 10, 11 and 12.

Nature and timing of feedback

Feedback will include a combination of a)  informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from homework and class based learning activities; and b)  formal written feedback will be given following every assessment.
