Description

This course addresses areas such as: the role of English in a globalised world; Why English: the historical dimension; the cultural legacy; the impact on other languages; linguistic features of new Englishes; issues in teaching English as a global language; how will English as an international language evolve.

This course also has a language skills development dimension and therefore explicit attention will be given devoted to the following areas: producing clearly written  and well-organised  academic  texts;  giving effective oral presentations.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will: a) have an understanding of the key issues relating to English as a global language b) have further developed their written competence in English, c) through textual analysis and seminar discussion,  have developed their powers of interpretation, argumentation

Transferable skills

At the end of the course, students should be able to: 

a) appreciate issues of clarity and flow of ideas in written communication

b) critically reflect on their academic writing in their own first, or academic, language

c) work productively in pairs and teams 

d) give effective presentations

e) analyze cultural and linguistic phenomena.

classes and seminars, two hours per week.

Assessment

Dossier of three short essays: approx 2400- 3000 words (70%): Group presentation in Week 11(30%)#

Nature and timing of feedback

Feedback will include a combination of informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from class based learning activities; formal written feedback will be given following every assessment
