Description

Students will explore the nature of academic English with classroom input as well as an enquiry-based project. This will entail students working in small groups on a project to investigate the style and structure of academic English texts.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • recognize a range of basic functions in academic writing
  • analyse the grammatical and lexical patterns of such functions
  • produce extended written academic text that draws on an appropriate range of academic writing functions
  • have experience of the requirements of an academic project

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level C1 of the Common European Framework.

Transferable skills

At the end of the course, students should be able to:

  • make oral and written presentations using appropriate media for a target audience
  • recognise and identify the views of others and work constructively with them
  • schedule tasks in order of importance
  • plan, conduct and report on a small scale research project

Teaching and learning methods

Seminars, 1.5 hours per week, plus half an hour tutorials to be arranged individually with students.

Assessment

  • one 1.5 hr hour exam held at the end of the semester (50%)
  • coursework essay (maximum 1000 words) in at least two drafts, showing tutor's corrections, and the student's responses (20%)
  • group report (15%)
  • group presentation (15%)
