ULCH20020 - Post-intermediate Mandarin Chinese (HSK 4)

This course aims to further develop reading, speaking, writing and listening skills practised in ULCH20010. It emphasises communication and comprehension, but also builds on the grammar base acquired in previous courses.  Class tests and assignments ensure that you keep abreast of your work and consolidate and review earlier material. 

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: 

  1. understand extended speech, most TV news programmes and many films;
  2. read articles about contemporary problems which out forward arguments and different points of view;
  3. speak with some fluency and spontaneity and take active part in discussions;
  4. give a presentation on a specialist subject, outlining advantages and disadvantages of particular cases; and
  5. write essays, reports and letters, putting forward personal points of view using simplified Chinese characters.

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at level B1+/B2 of the Common European Framework

Teaching and learning methods

Seminars, three hours per week.


  • Semester one: One written test (25%) which will normally take place during week 12, one dossier (10%) , week 12.
  • Semester two: HSK 4 or HSK 5 (depending on tutor's decision) Reading, Listening and Writing examination (35%); one oral test (20%), one dossier mark (10%). HSK4 (possibility of taking HSK5) Reading, Listening and Writing examination will take place in week 11 (Sunday). The oral assessments will normally be scheduled during week 12. The dossier is to be submitted in the week before Easter (usually week 8).

Nature and timing of feedback

Feedback will include a combination of:

  • informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from homework and class based learning activities;
  • formal written feedback will be given following every assessment.
