This course aims to develop your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing Hebrew at intermediate level. It lays emphasis on communication and comprehension skills but also builds on the grammar base acquired in the earlier elementary course. The focus is on accuracy as well as communication. Students will be expected to use the range of resources available to them in the Language Centre and to communicate with native speakers wherever possible, in order to develop cultural competence.
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters; and understand the main points of short, clear radio or TV programmes which deal with current affairs or topics of personal interest;
- understand texts using fairly high frequency, everyday or job-related language;
- intervene in a conversation if it deals with familiar topics;
- express, in brief oral exchanges, an opinion or ambition and to give short explanations for these; explain, briefly, a succession of events or to give information of an event;
- write simple, connected texts on familiar topics or topics of personal interest.
By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level A2 of the Common European Framework.

Teaching and learning methods
One three-hour seminar per week, delivered through blended learning which integrates on campus and on-line instruction as necessary. This will also include online digital learning available via Blackboard and supplemented by extra online resources to aid students in their independent learning
This course uses a web-based learning environment called Blackboard as a supplement to support and manage aspects of teaching and learning. Every student should try to log into Blackboard as early as possible in the year. Students will find class materials, feedback as well as a variety of extra resources to consolidate the grammar learned in class and to encourage independent learning.
The course will also have a facility for participants to engage and participate in the class remotely using ‘Go to Meeting’.
- Semester on: One written test (25%) which will normally take place during week 12, one dossier (10%), to be submitted in week 12.
- Semester two: One written test (25%), one aural (10%), one oral test (20%), one dossier mark (10%). Listening assessment will take place in the week before the Easter break (normally week 7 or 8); dossier is to be submitted in the week before Easter as well; oral and written assessments will normally be scheduled during weeks 11 and 12.
Nature and timing of feedback
Feedback will include a combination of:
- informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from homework and class based learning activities;
- formal written feedback will be given following every assessment.
