ULJA20010 - Intermediate Japanese

This course builds on ULJA10010or equivalent and aims to develop the students' ability to interact in Japanese in various contexts and in various styles. This is achieved through individual, pair and group work and self-access listening and reading materials, including web-based materials. Students will also be required to complete a dossier of independent work.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to: 

  1. Understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters; and understand the main points of short, clear radio or TV programmes which deal with current affairs or topics of personal interest
  2. Understand texts using fairly high frequency, everyday or job-related language
  3. Intervene in a conversation if it deals with familiar topics
  4. Express, in brief oral exchanges, an opinion or ambition and to give short explanations for these; explain, briefly, a succession of events or to give information of an event
  5. Write simple, connected texts on familiar topics or topics of personal interest

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level A2+/B1 of the Common European Framework.

Teaching and learning methods

Three hours of class contact per week. In order to develop their communicative skills, students will engage in pair work and group work activities, and will have the opportunity to listen to and read a range of adapted semi-authentic texts. Traditional exercises and written work will be used for grammar practice and consolidation. Language of teaching: English and Japanese.


  • Semester one: One written test (25%) which will normally take place during week 12, one dossier (10%), to be submitted in week 12.
  • Semester two: One written test (25%), one aural (10%), one oral test (20%), one dossier mark (10%). Listening assessment will take place in the week before the Easter break (normally week 7 or 8); dossier is to be submitted in the week before Easter as well; oral and written assessments will normally be scheduled during weeks 11 and 12.

Nature of the feedback

Feedback will include a combination of:

  • Informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from homework and class based learning activities
  • Formal written feedback will be given following every assessment
