ULSP20030 - Advanced Spanish 2

  • Pre-requisite: Successful completion of ULSP20020 or A-level Spanish (grade A*, A or B) if taken within the last 3 years.
  • Co-requisite: If you are studying a Modern Languages Degree, either single or joint honours, please refer to relevant guidance about eligibility for LEAP units on your programme structure. This course is not open to native or near native Spanish speakers.

Description

This courses aims to further develop linguistic skills in the language for those who have either obtained an A-level or who have successfully completed ULSP20020. It lays emphasis on speaking and listening skills, but equally places a strong emphasis on grammar and accuracy. Students will be expected to practise all skills outside the classroom, using the resources of the Language Centre and, where possible, the Face to Face scheme (enquire at the Language Centre library reception).

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. understand extended speech, lectures, films and TV programmes with reasonable ease
  2. understand long and complex texts and specialised articles in a different field from one's own
  3. interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity and take an active part in discussion
  4. give a presentation on a reasonably complex subject
  5. write letters, reports and essays in a clear and well structured way, tailoring the style appropriately

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level B2+/C1 of the Common European Framework.

Students who complete this course with satisfactory attendance and with a minimum mark of 60% (B2+); 75% (C1) will be given a UNILANG certificate of recognition.

Teaching and learning methods

One three-hour seminar per week, delivered through blended learning which integrates on campus and on-line instruction as necessary. This will also include online digital learning available via Blackboard and supplemented by extra online resources to aid students in their independent learning.

Assessment

Five pieces of assessed work as follows:

  • Semester one: One written test (25%) submitted by Turnitin, one dossier (10%), to be submitted by Turnitin.
  • Semester two: One written test (25%), one aural (10%), one oral test (20%), one dossier mark (10%).

Nature and timing of feedback

Feedback will include a combination of:

  • informal ongoing oral and written feedback resulting from homework and class based learning activities;
  • formal written feedback will be given following every assessment.
