Staff workshops

The University Language Centre is collaborating with the University's Staff Training and Development Unit to provide a range of workshops in writing for staff.

Writing in a clearer style (BF46)

For all staff.

Writing can sometimes seem clean and clear, and at other times it can seem laboured and dense. In this workshop, we will look at some ways to make writing easier to read and to write.

Achieving flow in writing (BF45)

For all staff.

Reader friendly writing should flow easily from one point to the next. In this workshop, we will analyse texts which do not seem to 'flow', and then explore ways of improving them.

Organising the introductions to academic articles (TL32)

For academic staff only.

Academic articles can often be more difficult to begin than to continue. This workshop will examine the Create A Research Space (CARS) model (Swales 1990) to see how it can help to get academic articles off the ground.

Insights and techniques for teaching international students (TL40)

For academic staff only.

This short workshop session is designed for staff who are seeking ideas to improve the effectiveness of their teaching with this group of learners. Areas covered include presenting new information, managing seminars and discussions, conducting tutorials and giving instructions, giving written feedback, and promoting a critical response. The workshop is informed by a recent research project which set out to explore this important area from the perspective of teachers who have worked with international students for many years, and the students themselves.

Please note: We will publish information on dates, times and venues for all of these workshops as soon as it becomes available.
