17th April 2020 Update

In response to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, our Pre-sessional courses will be delivered online for summer 2020.

Our pre-sessional courses are designed to help you develop the academic skills you need to progress to an undergraduate or postgraduate programme.

If you have applied for a course at The University of Manchester but have not yet fully met the English language requirement for your academic course you may be eligible to study an online pre-sessional course in order to meet those requirements.

For further information please see our course description.

When do the courses run?

The online courses will run on the dates advertised on our website here:course dates and fees.

Which course should I do?

The length of course you will be required to take will be determined by the academic school to which you have applied, with advice from the ULC.

Students requiring longer study will be advised to follow the English for Academic Purposes Pre-sessional pathway.

What is the class timetable?

You will have 6.5 hours of live learning class time, along with 8 hours of integrated self or group study. You will also have a weekly live tutorial with your tutor, either one-to-one, or in small groups of 3-4 students.

Live learning classes will be taught online between 8:30 - 12:00 British Summer Time (BST), along with a minimum of 2 hours integrated study sessions each day. On the 10th August, classes will take place at the slightly later time of 9:30 - 13:00 BST.

Outside of class time, your tutor will provide regular feedback throughout the course.

What is the class size?

Class sizes will be smaller than face-to-face classes to ensure that you are able to communicate effectively with your tutor. You will have 3 x 1.5 hour classes per week in groups of up to 8 students and a further 2 hour class per week in groups of up to 16 students.

Guided independent learning will be done either individually or in small groups of up to 4 students.

What is the minimum enrolment age?

The minimum enrolment age is 18.

Do I need a visa?

As the Pre-sessional courses will be taught online for 2020, students will not require a visa. Students will study in their home country.
