Welcome to the University of Manchester - Pre-sessional students 2020
Prepare for Manchester
Before you begin your online studies with us here in Manchester, there are things you can do to help you prepare for online study. We’ve put together a guide to help you. We will keep updating this guide so please check back regularly for updates.
Set up your student account
Once you receive your offer for your Pre-sessional course, you can set up your University of Manchester IT account.
Before you start your online Pre-sessional course, you will need to register as a student of the University of Manchester. Registration is an important step in your student journey and will give you access to everything you need during your studies. We will send you an email telling you when to register. It is important you do not try to register before we contact you.
- For the 10 week Pre-sessional course, you will be able to register from 8 June.
- For the 6 week Pre-sessional course, you will be able to register from 8 July.
It is important that you complete all 10 steps of registration to fully register as a student. You can upload a photo of yourself during the registration process which will be printed on your student card when you arrive.
Preparing for success
To help you get the most out of your online study, it is important to prepare yourself to ensure you can access everything you need. To access the course you will need:
· Access to a PC or laptop with internet connection (a phone or tablet are not suitable for this course)
· Speakers and a microphone or headset
· A webcam
· A reliable browser - we recommend Google Chrome or Firefox
· A fast internet connection – ideally 28.8 kbps speed or above (Broadband connection highly recommended)
We intend to teach you using Blackboard Collaborate and Zoom for your lessons. We will send you more details on how to access your before the start of the course.
Starting your pre-sessional course
The week before your Pre-sessional course begins, you will have access to your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). This is the system that you will use throughout your online Pre-sessional course. On there, you will find a number of welcome videos along with some work to complete before your first day.
You will be placed in a class suitable for your current level of English. We will write to you before the start of the course with information on your class and how to access your online classroom, ready for your first lesson.
Student Support and Guidance
The University Language Centre has a dedicated Student Welfare Officer who is available to support you and provide you with advice on a range of issues such as:
- life in Manchester, settling into online studies, your new life and cultural diversity
- health and looking after yourself
- online safety and security
In your Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard), you will find a number of welcome videos from the Student Welfare Officer who will tell you more about the support available to you.
You will also have access to a wide range of support services at the University of Manchester which you can find out about on our student support website.
At Manchester, we take well-being very seriously. Well-being is about finding ways to stay happy and healthy during your studies to help you to succeed. Read the six ways to well-being for ideas and tips on how to make positive changes to help you feel good and live well.
We know how important it is for our students to be able to speak directly with current University of Manchester students. We have a dedicated team of Student Ambassadors who will be your Pre-sessional "Housemates" throughout your course.
Your Pre-sessional Housemates will be on hand online, to answer your questions and to tell you more about being a student at the University of Manchester. They will also be providing you with weekly videos and blogs to tell you more about being a student in Manchester to help you to get to know the University and help you to settle in.
